Watch: High school basketball players talk rivalries, farm animals, haircut rules

AUGUSTA — What a week.

The high school basketball tournament is nearing its apex, with regional semifinals and finals set to tip off this weekend. By late Saturday evening, the final contenders for coveted Gold Balls will be determined.

At the Augusta Civic Center, it’s been a wild week through the D South, C South and A North tournaments. We’ve seen some great stuff.

There’s been an upset or two (hello, Messalonskee boys), a crowd-pleasing dunk (Skowhegan senior Adam Savage with authority) and plenty of noteworthy performances (Brewer boys set long-distance tourney record).

Throughout the action, we’ve talked with some of the student-athletes who’ve left an indelible mark at the Augusta Civic Center, as well as captured a few compelling moments.

Here’s some of highlights, in no particular order:

Walk-off winner

Messalonskee sophomore Merrick Smith showed plenty of poise when he beat defending Class A champ Nokomis and the buzzer with a tough shot to end a wild A North quarterfinal game.

Hey, the cows have to eat

Forest Hills guard Allie Dunning (right) had a busy morning on Feb. 20. Prior to her team’s victory over Greenville in a D South quarterfinal, she had to feed some livestock before heading to Augusta. It’s so Maine — and in a good way.

“No team is gonna want to play us.”

You have to appreciate the physical style that the Skowhegan boys basketball team enjoys playing. The River Hawks have a ton of size, with three players (Collin and Kyle LePage, as well as Adam Savage) standing 6-foot-5. The trio is tough to defend or attack. It also does not lack any confidence. After an A North quarterfinal victory over rival Lawrence, Kyle LePage said no team wants a piece of Skowhegan.

Harry Styles’s Fans Speculate About his Dyed Hair at the 2023 Brits

Harry Styles arrived in style at the 2023 Brits. In a stark contrast to the styles-clothes-24-hour-security-vault-49061586″ class=”ga-track” data-ga-category=”internal click” data-ga-label=”https://www.popsugar.co.uk/celebrity/harry-styles-clothes-24-hour-security-vault-49061586″ data-ga-action=”body text link”bright and colourful outfits we’ve been used to seeing him wear during his “Love on Tour” shows, the singer went for a top-to-toe black look as he arrived at London’s o2 Arena. With input from his longtime stylist Harry Lambert, Styles’s black velvet suit was still so much more than a suit. The flared trousers give a ’70 feel while the textured blazer included a peplum, meaning the fabric is structured to stick out from the waist to create a dramatic silhouette. The design detail was particular popular in the 2000s and is making a comeback – his “Don’t Worry Darling” costar Florence Pugh made a case for the peplum just last week – yet the looks has sparked debate among fashion lovers.

Now, we’ve come to know Styles is a fan of neck decorations. Feather boas make a regular appearance in his wardrobe, as do an array of pearl necklaces. Yet for the Brits red carpet, he opted for an oversized black corsage. And we mean oversized. The floral addition ensured Styles’s outfit was not to be missed, while he added a stack of rings and a cross necklace to finish.

It wasn’t just his outfit that got fans talking, though. Speculation began to arise on social media about his hair and whether the darker shade was a lighting trick or newly dyed. One tweeted, “they 100% dyed his hair to go with the darker color pallete”. It’s a big night for Styles who is brits-winners-2023-49060794″ class=”ga-track” data-ga-category=”internal click” data-ga-label=”https://www.popsugar.co.uk/entertainment/brits-winners-2023-49060794″ data-ga-action=”body text link”nominated for four awards, including artist of the year, and is performing during the evening. She also added that it was particularly helpful for shorter women who tend to have this problem more than others.

In a video posted to their account, lazuli, told their 33.6k followers that it takes just seconds but is a “life-changing style hack for my short girlies that love sweatpants.”

They then recorded themselves demonstrating how it is done.

I saved $300 on alterations with my fashion hack - it made me red carpet ready
I’m a size 24 - my easy fashion hack will hide your spare tyre belly

The first thing to do is take a plain hair tie that has a lot of stretch to it.

Next, lazuli explained: “Put the hair band around your leg”.

She showed how she placed it above her sock where your calves meet your ankles.

The third step is to “fold the jogger/ sweatpant over the hair band.”

Once this part is done, simply keep folding upwards until you have your desired length.

Lazuli added that she knew it would come in extremely handy, as she wrote: “Thank me later.”

And it seems her prediction was correct, as the video racked up 7654 likes and counting.

Social media users and fellow fashion fans were also quick to comment.

The ’80s new wave band performed a set for Radio 2 as part of Piano Room Month that was broadcast yesterday (February 16) and were accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra for their cover. They also revisited two of their classic hits, ‘Love Plus One’ and ‘Fantastic Day’, elsewhere in the set, which you can listen to in full here.

“It’s a great song, isn’t it? [It’s] so catchy,” said frontman Nick Heyward when Radio 2’s Ken Bruce asked him why they had chosen to cover ‘As It Was’.

Haircut 100 were only active between 1981-1984 but have since reunited. “We’re back together till death us do part. This is it for life now,” Heywood said. “It’s not just for Christmas, Haircut 100 is for life.”

The band was also asked about their music being heard by younger audiences for the first time. “It’s like a second hand shop, isn’t it? But it’s new to you when you buy it, it’s a new outfit to you,” Heywood said.

The band’s 1982 debut album ‘Pelican West’ is about to be re-released. They are also set to play a one-off reunion show at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in May 13 and told Bruce that they hope to tour later in the year.

Meanwhile, Styles took home four gongs at the BRIT Awards 2023 last weekend, including Song Of The Year for ‘As It Was’. Having also won the awards for Best Album, Best Pop/R&B Artist and Artist Of The Year, Styles

Marsai Martin flexed a head full of beautiful curls at Carol’s Daughter’s Pajama Jam in celebration of their newest collection, Born to Repair. The actress and producer announced her latest role as a brand ambassador for the haircare company that has prioritized healthy tresses since 1993.

The Born to Repair collection strives to restore moisture while rebuilding the strength of your hair. Heat damage, constant manipulation, and lack of hydration can be detrimental, and this line aims to reconstruct your hair strand by strand.

Check out the magic of the night in this reel, and read what Marsai has to say about becoming a brand ambassador, her favorite product from the Born to Repair collection, and her thoughts on Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance.

HelloBeautiful: You’ve just become Carol’s Daughter’s latest brand ambassador for the Born to Repair collection. I saw you on the red carpet and you had beautiful curls in your hair. Tell me about that hairstyle and what products you used to achieve the look.

Marsai Martin: I love doing different styles, but for this event, I knew I wanted to embrace different textures and curls and do something more natural and simplistic than what I usually do. And, of course, for this, I wanted to use the collection.

I use the 60 Second Moisture Treatment, the shampoo, and the conditioner. And I love a good leaving cream, so I made sure I put that on after I was done washing my hair. Oh, the Reviving Oil, too – basically the whole collection.

The entire collection is refreshing and moisturizing. And that’s the main reason why I wanted to connect with the brand. They care about hair that’s damaged or hair that has been through a lot. They care
